The importance of thickness in laminate flooring
A lot of customers ask us about laminate flooring thickness. We explain that it measures from the baseboard to the top and that it shouldn't include padding or underlayment, even if that is pre-attached.
Laminate ranges from 6-mm to 12-mm and, as a rule, it shouldn't be less than 8-mm. If, however, budget is an issue and if your subfloor is level and debris-free, you might be able to get away with 7-mm; keep in mind that subfloor imperfections can telegraph to the surface floor, so make sure it's okay.
Why is flooring thickness critical?
We also explain why thicker is better. It's more impact resistant and durable, but keep in mind that the top wear layer is the major player when it comes to strength; this is the top clear, aluminum-coated sheet that shields the floor from scratches and scuffs.
Thickness has much more to do with aesthetics because it's a lot easier to carve more intricate designs in heavier flooring. It can also hide subfloor imperfections better and is less squeaky and echoey. Moreover, the highest thickness, 12-mm, is the ultimate in achieving the most authentic laminate wood flooring feeling underfoot.
Does a small 2-mm difference matter?
Absolutely! 6-mm can provide a host of problems, from poor acoustics to low impact resistance and visible subfloor imperfections. That improves as thickness increases, with 8-mm being commonly selected for durability, comfort, and affordability.
When it reaches 10-mm, all problems that occur with the thinner materials are eliminated, with 12-mm being the best hardwood with some of the most intricate, visually appealing designs.
